OCP Webinar: Laying the Foundations for an Open Edge
Date and time
Hear top trends for adoption of edge computing with wireline and wireless networking from OCP, HPE, Kaloom and analyst firm AvidThink
Description:
Open hardware has played an important role in driving innovation and allowing a multi-vendor ecosystem in centralized data centers. As the cloud computing model spreads to the edge, the same open and disaggregated model will play an important role in edge computing.
Presenters (learn more below):
- Cliff Grossner (Moderator): OCP
- Roy Chua (Analyst): AvidThink
- Jon Mechling (Panelist): HPE
- Philippe Michelet (Panelist): Kaloom
Abstract:
The edge computing phenomena is firmly recognized as real and driven by the desire for low-latency processing, need for lower bandwidth consumption, and mandates on data sovereignty.
Unlike centralized data centers, edge locations are numerous, highly distributed, and often remote. And with power and space constraints in edge locations, edge platforms exhibit more diversity and specialization.
This webinar explores the role that open design plays in the multi-vendor edge and shares best practices from the community on how to lay a strong edge foundation. We will cover edge platform selection strategies along with new approaches to the provisioning and management of hardware, software, and connectivity. In addition, we will discuss how to achieve the best scalability and performance for edge workloads like AI/ML-powered computer vision, data analytics, and 5G wireless.
During the webinar, you’ll learn:
- Top trends and drivers for adoption of edge computing with wireline and wireless networking
- Latest open edge computing product and solution roadmaps
- Technology investments needed for open edge computing to accelerate adoption
- Multi-vendor and open approaches to provisioning and managing diverse edge platforms
- Laying the right foundation to power leading edge workloads today, including 5G
Who should attend?
Server, Networking and Storage Architects, Data Center Equipment Vendors, Silicon Vendors, Colocation Service Providers, Telecom Service Providers, IT buyers and Decision Makers, Enterprise CIO and CTO, emerging edge computing companies
Meet the speakers!
Cliff Grossner, VP Market Research at OCP
At the Open Compute Project Foundation, Dr. Grossner leads its market intelligence function and is responsible for driving awareness of OCP, training and certification programs, and guiding inventors presenting their early-stage company ideas to potential investors. Dr. Grossner has more than 25 years of telecommunications industry experience encompassing scientific research, market analysis, corporate and product strategy, product management and marketing. His current interests includeIT Ecosystems from cloud to the edge looking at the equipment [servers, IT networking and storage] and software, and physical infrastructure [power and cooling] needed for computation, with a focus on edge computing, silicon components included in IT equipment including coprocessors for AI and ML. Previously, Dr. Grossner was head of the Cloud and Data Center Research Practice, which he launched at Infonetics research and followed through transitions to IHS, IHS Markit and Informa Group. Prior to Infonetics, he held senior positions, including heading strategic marketing for Alcatel-Lucent's enterprise network business, tenures at Bell Labs, several startups and Nortel. He earned his Ph.D. at McGill University, and his Master of Science in Computer Science at Concordia University, winning national scholarships to support his graduate work. He holds more than 10 patents in computer networking, networking embedded security and telecommunications applications.
Roy Chua, Founder & Principal at AvidThink
Roy Chua is founder and principal at AvidThink, an independent research and advisory service formed in 2018 out of SDxCentral's research arm. Roy was previously co-founder at SDxCentral where he ran both the research and product teams. Prior to that, he was a management consultant working with both Fortune 500 companies and startups. He has 20+ years of experience in telco and enterprise cloud computing, networking and security, including founding several Silicon Valley startups.
Jon Mechling, Senior Product Manager at HPE
Jon Mechling is a Senior Product Manager in HPE's Communications Technology Group. His current responsibilities focus on HPE's Open Distributed Infrastructure Management offerings. Prior to HPE, Jon held product management positions for telecommunications systems and software at companies including Cisco Systems and Lucent Technologies. He started his career as a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs. Jon has his BSE in electrical engineering from Princeton, his MSE in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan, and his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania.
Philippe Michelet, Product Management at Kaloom
Philippe Michelet is currently leading Product Management at Kaloom with a particular focus on our vision at the “Edge” as “Unified Edge Fabric” combined to one 5G component – UPF. Acceleration in HW via P4 and a fully containerized solution (K8/OCP) allow a massive cost reduction in both CAPEX and OPEX. Before joining Kaloom, Philippe Michelet was leading Product Management at Snaproute where he refocused the strategy on “Edge” before the company was acquired by Infoblox late 2019. Prior to Snaproute, Philippe worked for HPE as Senior Director of Global Product Line Management, Data Center Networking, driving the strategy and roadmap of the entire HW/SW product line as well as the associated management and orchestration solutions. Prior to HPE, he was part of the Advanced Technology Group (Office of the CTO, HP Networking), and participated in the creation of the “Virtual Application Networks” framework (HP SDN architecture including VAN SDN Controller, SDN Manager and multiple SDN applications). Philippe has a bachelor’s degree in software engineering and a Specialized Master from the National Institute of Telecommunications.
